Ammolite Rings

When one hears about precious or rare gemstones, one may think of diamonds, perhaps rubies, emeralds or pearls. What may not come to mind is ammolite. Yet ammolite is, in fact, one of the most valuable and rare gems on earth.

Ammolite is created in the fossilized shell of a marine creature that has been extinct for more than 65 million years. That creature is called an ammonite. Ammonite fossils can be found around the world but those discovered by natives in the Province of Alberta, Canada bore the most amazing colors.

Ammolite was used in healing ceremonies by those same natives. They also believed it had the power to draw buffalo, thereby helping them in their hunt. For that reason, the natives called it buffalo stone. Ammolite has also been adopted for use in Feng Shui practices to promote healing. In 1981, it was given official gemstone status by several organizations and, since 2004, it has been the official gemstone of Alberta.

Ammolite is best used in mounted jewelery. This means that it is most likely to be found in pieces such as earrings or pendants. Ammolite rings generally require that the gemstone be protected in its setting so that it remains undamaged by the banging or scraping of everyday wear. For those fortunate enough to own an Ammolite ring, it should be treated with due reverence for something so incredibly beautiful and rare.
